DESIGN CATEGORIES
The 94/25/EC Directive introduces the following division of watercraft into 4 design categories:
| Design category | Wind power (Beaufort scale) | Significant wave height (H1/3, m) |
| A – OCEAN | above 8O | above 4 |
| B – OFFSHORE | up to 8O inclusive | up to 4 inclusive |
| C – INSHORE | up to 6O inclusive | up to 2 inclusive |
| D – SHELTERED WATERS | up to 4O inclusive | up to 0.5 inclusive |
Definitions of design categories:
A - OCEAN:
Designed for extended voyages where conditions may exceed wind force 8O (Beaufort scale) and significant wave heights of 4 m and above, and vessels largely self-sufficient.
B - OFFSHORE:
Designed for offshore voyages where conditions up to, and including, wind force 8O and significant wave heights up to, and including, 4 m may be experienced.
C - INSHORE:
Designed for voyages in coastal waters, large bays, estuaries, lakes and rivers where conditions up to, and including, wind force 6O and significant wave heights up to, and including, 2 m may be experienced.
D - SHELTERED WATERS:
Designed for voyages on small lakes, rivers, and canals where conditions up to, and including, wind force 4O and significant wave heights up to, and including, 0,5 m may be experienced.

The Germanischer Lloyd report, notified body to the 94/25/EC Directive of the European Parliament and Council of June 16, 1994, confirming the granting of a design category B – ‘Offshore’ to the BORA 838 yacht.
